With the rise of VR and devices like Google Cardboard, people want to use their smartphones to experience new technology. Unfortunately, current gen phone displays are not suitable for VR . They traditionally have high resolution, but the refresh rate is not good enough. Thus, “screen-door effect” appears so the lines between pixels become visible.

In order to solve this problem Japan Display (JDI), a joint venture between Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi, added more pixels into every inch and consequently invented adaptive VR screen. The new 3.42-inch display operates at  1,440×1,700 resolution, having almost twice as high ppi as the iPhone: 651 vs 326. Increased number of pixels is not the only innovation; new displays also have 90 Hz refresh rate and fast response time: 3-6 ms, which helps to lower the motion blur.

As additional pixels have really improved the picture, the company has decided to start working on screens with 800 pixels for inch.

It’s still unclear who will be interested in the new display in VR market. HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR already use 90 Hz or higher refresh rate in their screens, but they have lower pixel density. Therefore, JDI may choose between adapting display for smartphones and offering new technologies to VR headsets makers.
